Introduction

The Ayurveda Teaching Hospital (ATH), located in Kirtipur, Kathmandu, is the foremost government-run Ayurvedic medical facility and teaching institution in Nepal. Operating under the Ayurveda Campus of Tribhuvan University’s Institute of Medicine (IOM), ATH plays a crucial role in preserving, practicing, and propagating Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest systems of medicine.

Established in 1972, ATH serves as both an academic training center and a functional hospital delivering classical Ayurvedic healthcare to the public.

Historical Background

The hospital was born out of a merger between:

  • Government Ayurveda Vidyalaya (school)

  • Chikitsalaya (hospital)

These were integrated into Tribhuvan University’s Institute of Medicine (IOM) with the vision to institutionalize traditional healing in a modern academic framework. Since then, the hospital has evolved into a center for both clinical care and Ayurvedic education.

Academic Programs

All academic activities at the hospital are governed by Tribhuvan University and are affiliated with the Medical Education Commission (MEC) of Nepal.

1. Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

  • Duration: 5.5 years (including 1-year compulsory internship)

  • Objective: To produce competent Ayurvedic physicians trained in both classical Ayurveda and modern medical basics.

    • Ayurveda Samhita (Classical texts)

2. MD in Ayurveda – Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine)
