Introduction

B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), located in Dharan, Sunsari District, is a leading autonomous health sciences university in Nepal. Established on January 18, 1993, and named after Nepal’s first democratically elected Prime Minister, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, BPKIHS was envisioned as a center of excellence for medical education, healthcare services, and research. The institute became an autonomous university on October 28, 1998, and operates under a Nepal-India cooperation framework. ​

• MBBS: Initiated in 1994, recognized by the Medical Councils of Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka.

• BDS: Started in 1999, recognized by the Nepal Medical Council.

• MD/MS: Started in 1999, with specializations in Anesthesiology, Clinical Pharmacology, Dermatovenerology, ENT, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, and Surgery. Recognized by the Nepal Medical Council and several by the Medical Council of India.

• MSc in Clinical Sciences

• MSc in Basic Sciences: Specializations include Human Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology.

• MSc Nursing: Specializations in Community Health Nursing, Psychiatry Nursing, Maternal Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing, and Medical-Surgical Nursing.

• MDS: Started in 2011, with specializations in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Periodontology & Oral Implantology, Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry, Oral Medicine & Radiology, Public Health Dentistry, Oral Pathology, and Orthodontics.

• MPH: Initiated in 2005, focusing on public health education. ​

BPKIHS has implemented the Teaching District Concept, a model of community-based education (CBE) where medical students are posted in district hospitals and primary health centers across eight districts in Eastern Nepal.
