Introduction

Madan Bhandari Academy of Health Sciences (MBAHS) is a provincial autonomous medical academy located in Hetauda, the capital of Bagmati Province, Nepal. Established in 2018, MBAHS was named after the late Madan Bhandari, a renowned Nepalese political leader who advocated for social equity, justice, and community development.

MBAHS stands as Nepal’s first provincial health sciences institution, launched with the objective of addressing the region’s pressing healthcare and educational needs through localized governance, professional training, and community-centric health systems.

Affiliated Hospital – Hetauda Hospital

The core clinical wing of MBAHS is Hetauda Hospital, a government-run, secondary-level hospital that also functions as its teaching hospital.

Key Features:

• Originally established in 2017 BS (1960 AD) as a 15-bed health facility.

• Now a 170-bed general hospital, expanding rapidly with provincial government support.

• Facilities include:

  • Emergency and ICU services

  • Anesthesiology

  • General Medicine and Surgery

  • Gynecology and Obstetrics

  • Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU)

  • Psychiatric and Mental Health

  • Radiology and Laboratory diagnostics

  • Dialysis and Kidney Transplant Services

  • Family Planning, Immunization, TB-DOTS, HIV/ARV Programs

Highlight:

It is one of the few provincial centers offering kidney transplantation services in Nepal.

Academic Programs at MBAHS

MBAHS has developed a progressive educational structure designed to meet the diverse healthcare needs of Nepal’s growing population. The institution currently offers four key undergraduate programs and plans to expand into postgraduate training.

Undergraduate Programs:

1. B.Sc. Nursing

   • 4-year program

   • Affiliated with Nepal Nursing Council

   • Emphasizes clinical care, leadership, and community engagement

2. Bachelor of Public Health (BPH)

   • 4-year degree

   • Focuses on disease prevention, health promotion, and epidemiological research

3. Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)

   • Prepares students for careers in drug manufacturing, pharmacy practice, and pharmaceutical research

4. B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT)

   • Trains students in diagnostic and analytical lab work, with emphasis on pathology, microbiology, and biochemistry

All programs are aligned with Nepal Health Professional Council (NHPC) and respective accrediting bodies.

Nepal Journal of Health Sciences (NJHS)

MBAHS publishes the Nepal Journal of Health Sciences, a peer-reviewed medical journal encouraging:

• Clinical research

• Public health studies

• Policy and community health impact analysis

The journal promotes evidence-based health practices and provides a platform for young scholars and experienced faculty alike.

Community Engagement and Provincial Responsibility

MBAHS aims to decentralize medical education and healthcare delivery in Nepal by:

• Integrating local healthcare workers into its training system

• Organizing mobile health camps in remote Bagmati Province areas

• Strengthening rural health post connections with telemedicine support

• Training mid-level health personnel (MLHPs) and ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse Midwives)
